From on a rollercoaster to musical speed dating, it appears that speed dating can be adapted to almost any situation. Bmibaby recently made a play for the ‘most unique speed dating event’ when they lined up six boys and six girls for what was probably the first mid-air speed date!

They were being flown from Belfast to East Midlands Airport and being treated to a day out in Nottingham with a difference to mark the opening of bmibaby’s new route.

As soon as the fasten seatbelt sign was turned off the speed dating began, with the boys gingerly moving around the plane while the girls had to make do with orange juices rather than a calming glass of wine. The daters were provided with a list of potential questions to help break the ice, including

• What do you do for fun?
• How would you spend your millions if you won the lottery?
• If you were an animal in the wild what would you be?

Everyone seemed to have a good time at their first speed dating event, with Jennifer Millar (19), a student from Lisburn, saying, “I was nervous as we got started. I hate awkwardness so those questions were a good ice-breaker. It was much better craic than I had expected and I’d consider doing it again. Speed dating has a much more negative reputation than it should do. This has been really good fun as well as being safe.”

Mark O’Gormley (23), a sports student from Belfast, said: “I had no notions of what speed dating would be like at all so I really didn’t have any idea what to expect. I’ve been single for a year and a bit and normally I meet girls through my friends. This was great though, I ticked two people and I would really be interested in seeing them again if they match with me.

“Speed dating has a really negative image and I don’t know why. I would definitely try it again, this has been a fantastic day,”

1. Don’t take it too seriously! You’re there to have fun. When you’re having fun, you’re much more interesting, approachable and attractive than when you’re stressed out.
2. Grab a drink as you arrive; but not more than one. You want to be relaxed, not tipsy. The women there  have paid money and given up their time to meet real you; not inebriated you.
3. Arrive a little early to give yourself some time to warm up before the main action starts. Pick a woman that you think you are likely to be able to chat to without finding her intimidating, and initiate a conversation with her with the aim of simply making her laugh. All the women at speed dating are there specifically to meet guys so you are guaranteed of a positive reception. The purpose of this conversation is to get your social juices flowing, let any initial nervousness subside, and experience feeling good about meeting women.
   If you feel intimidated by the hottest girl in the room’s looks, warm up with the less appealing prospects instead and get in a good mood so you can be your relaxed, friendly, approachable self when you rotate to the hot girl during the business part of the evening.
4. Joke around about it. Let’s face it: Speed Dating is an artificial construct. You don’t normally meet people in such a structured environment. There isn’t usually a guy with a bell walking around telling you that your time is up. I made jokes about the previous guy (who always seemed to take too long when told to move), the woman’s profession, the notes I was taking, and the whole situation we were in.
5. Aim to make the girls laugh. Women love guys with a sense of humor. They love guys who can make them laugh. Go in with the intention that you’ve got 5 minutes to make her laugh. This takes the stress off you trying to impress her with your great job, big bank account and wonderful personality; all of which may or may not actually be the assets that stack up in her eyes anyway.
6. Have a couple of fun, interesting questions up your sleeve. I went with asking which Flintstones character they thought would make the best partner (Fred or Barney), and which wife they related to most strongly (Wilma or Betty). Then I got into a discussion about their characters: Fred the workaholic, Barney the easy-going cool guy, Wilma the dominant woman, Betty the sweet naive girl.
   The women who went along with the question seemed like fun people to get to know better; the one who declined to answer even after I teased her about it wasn’t so appealing to me. You can ask just about anything interesting and off-the-wall; it’s not the answer they give, but the way they respond that gives you insights into them. Are they fun and spontaneous, or judgemental and fearful of anything that’s a bit out-there?

7. Don’t ask what they do for a living. Snap judgements based on a person’s stereotyped career aren’t helpful in actually getting to know someone; and when you have such limited time, all you can really do is get a sense of whether this is someone you’d enjoy hanging out with or not. Knowing that they’re an accountant or lawyer doesn’t help. When they told me what they did anyway, I generally teased them about it and changed the subject. “Hey, you don’t need to be ashamed about working for a bank you know! Really.” Smirk. Who wants to talk about work on a weekend anyway? At the end of one conversation which we both laughed the whole way through, the girl said “Hang on… I still don’t know what you do!!!”. Perfect. A little mystique never goes astray.
8. Worry about who you want to contact later. Stay relaxed, take notes as you go around so you don’t forget who is who, and fill in the contact card later. Of course taking notes about people is unnatural, so that’s just another thing to joke about. “Right, I’m writing down ‘Stalker. No sense of humor’” got them laughing every time.
9. Pre-arrange to meet up with an existing female friend for drinks later the same evening. Knowing that you have other options makes you more appealing, and subconsciously takes the pressure off you to “hook up”.
10. Why does there always have to be a 10? No one ever said this was the ‘top 10 tips’?!

It seems that British guys have lost some of the traditional British reserve, although they still like to hit the pub for a first date – perhaps the idea of combining alcohol and attraction is more persistent!

A Contiki Holidays investigation into finding love in Europe reveals the Italian Stallion is a thing of the past. People from the UK, Spain, Germany, Italy and France were surveyed to find out how we all compare when it comes to love and the results may come as a surprise.

It seems Italian men are no longer the bold Stallions we once knew with the majority now relying on guess work when it come to forging a relationship. Just under half of the all Italian men polled said they’re actually too shy to tell a girl how they feel and just hope they would guess.

British men on the other hand have no hang ups on bulldozing straight in and telling the female of the species exactly how they feel, whereas three in five German men said they would try and make eye contact and offer a cheeky wink to win over the ladies. And we thought it was the Portugese winkers that were our competition!

Whichever way European men choose to secure their date it seems love will transcend any language barrier with 67% of all respondents saying that a it wouldn’t put them off starting a relationship with someone.  One in four German men even admitted to learning chat up phrases in other languages to help their cause.

All nations seem to get back to their roots when it comes to the first date with over half of all British men treating their dates to a pint in the pub.  The French and Spanish show their love of food with half of both nations opting for a restaurant as their perfect setting. Once the Italian men are brave enough to ask a girl on a date they start to show their romantic side by taking them on a picturesque walk. They were also the most gentlemanly with 90% saying they’d pay the bill in a restaurant. Brits came a close second with just over half of men saying it was their duty to cover the bill on the first date. French men believe in equal rights and said men and women should pay 50/50 while the Spanish disagreed with the majority thinking it’s only fair that the inviting party pay up!

Once the first date is over European men join forces in agreement when they say they would expect more than just a goodnight kiss but there may be some disappointed faces, as the majority of women across Europe are in agreement too – they will just say no!
